There were many disturbing events in 2014 – Ferguson – New York, ISIS, MH370 and Asia Air’s loss of Flight 8501, Ebola and so on. It is easy to approach world and U.S. events with low expectations. I think this is a mistake. When negotiating, you need to leave room for compromise. That’s why they say, start high (or low depending on which side of the equation) and then move from there. If I’m trying to settle a $50,000 debt for a client, if the target goal is $15,000 (which would be a good outcome), I will start with $5,000 to $7,500 along with an explanation why this is the absolute most amount of money the client could ever conceivably (borrow from someone) to pay. From here, there is room to negotiate.
We need to do the same with our expectations for 2015. Let’s start with a Super Bowl for the Lions, a World Championship for the Tigers, the Stanley Cup for the Wings and – now I’m going to really push it – a playoff spot for the Pistons! On the economy – let’s hope for reform to address the Student Debt problem and tougher laws prohibiting financial institutions from committing fraud upon the public and then white washing the problem by paying a fine (a tax deductible one at that!).
On a personal goal – say to yourself, “I am going to save for retirement and control my debt.” If you are 50+, you need say, “I will investigate Medicaid and Nursing Care and Asset Preservation alternatives for my parents and begin to position my estate and holdings for my later years.”
