Certain memories never fade. I still can feel the excitement I felt on the last day of school – from elementary through college – that wonderful feeling of a summer of freedom – to enjoy the weather, play baseball and go to recreation (which was like an open day camp at elementary schools). The feeling was the same through college. Even now, I capture the same feeling when I leave the office to begin a vacation or when the warmth of summer kicks in.
By July 4th – as a kid and even now, the feeling of summer beginning its initial slide surfaces and before you know it – it’s August and Labor Day; a new year of school and the winter road lies ahead. With vacations – I clock the 1/3, midpoint and 2/3 marks as to the number of days left – and as I do so, the thrill of “time off” fades with the reality of the return. On Sunday night , I am in the “get ready” mode for Monday and the following week’s work adventure.
I know many, but not all, people share similar thoughts. I often say to myself, “Grow up, get over it and enjoy each day – work day, weekend day, summer and winter – they are all great days.” That’s a good thought, and maybe it will work for you, but I will always cherish mid-June and the first day of vacation.
There is a flip side, however, to the season change. September has always been the time for me to “get serious” about life. Summer is over and it’s time to charge forward with the new plan for the next year and future. This is a good thing. If you allow yourself to be passive as to creating new opportunity and accomplishing objectives, your future will be passive – and the goals you want to achieve will pass you by.
Don’t let that happen. Let September be the wake-up call you need to chart your new course. Get the Estate Plan done that you put off for the last three years. Take steps to begin saving money for retirement, rather than paying interest on credit cards until you’re 75 and broke. Have the Buy/Sell Agreement between you and your partners done, so if someone wants or needs to exit the business, chaos will not ensue. Bottom line – Get Serious in September. There is more to life than watching football!
Enjoy the holiday, and be sure to sign up or tell your friends about our upcoming Seminar on September 10th! This can be your first step!
